review 1: This is a beautiful book. Even if you don't like to bake, when you see these cakes, you'll want to know how they were constructed - most of them are truly dazzling. The recipes here are not for the faint of heart, and even the easiest is low-level intermediate. They do get more complicated as each Chapter progresses, so you could look at this as a dessert tutorial if you wanted. Also, many of these desserts are pretty time-consuming to create. So while they're real show-stoppers, I'm not sure when I'd find the time to make them.The photography is stunning and I think I would have given this a star if there weren't so many 'Errata', a list of which you can download from the publisher's website and keep in the book. Since this is her 3rd book, and baking (especially at... more this level) needs to be so precise, this was a problem for me. Also, the book wouldn't fit into my regular baking life - I just don't have time to do this. However, it's worth checking out for some ideas and if I'm ever near her bakery, I will definitely check it out.
review 2: Absolutely gorgeous book - I really enjoyed reading this book and admiring the beautiful cakes, but the full page of Errata in the edition I read was not cool. What's up? Stewart, Tabori and Chang is an excellent cookbook publisher and Gesine's other books were all well-reviewed. I've made her Golden Eggs recipe from Confections of a Master Baker many times - what's up with this book? Hope this gets fixed in future printings. less
