review 1: Deep in the Scottish highlands, eleven-year-old Callum McGregor lives with his parents and brother on his family farm. Cycling in the glen one day with his friends, Callum meets Iona- a strange, wise girl with a secret.Iona knows what lives on Callum's farm: an osprey, a very rare and endangered bird of prey. And together with Callum and his family, she must guard the secret with her life. But when Iona dies suddenly of meningitis, can Callum keep their secret safe? And will he be able to keep his last promise to Iona? This book reminded me of Michael Morpurgo's Dear Olly and Katharine Paterson's Bridge to Terabithia. It had stunning imagery and beautifully-written characters with intricate connections between them. What was brilliant about it was that it carried the a... moretmosphere of the Highlands perfectly, the soft stirring pines and the slanting golden light: I was brought up in a similar environment, and this reminded me so strongly of Scotland that it hurt! A carefully created and very clever, although maybe not particularly original, children's novel.
review 2: Beautiful, beautiful story! One of the best books I have read this year. Could not put it down. Michael Morpurgo is quoted on the cover with "opens your eyes, touches your heart, and is so engaging it almost turns the pages for you". This is so true! If I were a classroom teacher in upper primary, this book would be one of my read-alouds. There is so much you can do with it, it invites inquiry, bringing in maps, Google Earth and so much more. It is also a wonderful story of friendship, empathy, caring for fellow human beings and animals as well as a great example for taking action. I had goosebumps at the end of the story - and needed the tissue box quite a few times as I was reading the book. less
