review 1: Sharp ObjectsI don’t think there’s a single person in Sharp Objects who isn’t seriously screwed-up, and I don’t mean run-of-the-mill screwed-up. I mean these people have problems. Make you want to put the book down and walk away problems. The book isn’t really about the mystery. I had that figured out round about chapter two. The killer was my second choice, by the way, because the red-herring was just more believable. I mean, sure, I can follow who the killer is from a plot-logic point-of-view, but it’s just less likely. Everything else about the book is spot-on, and I have absolutely no trouble believing there really are people just as screwed up as the characters in this book.Dark PlacesThere’s not a lot I really want to say about Dark Places. I didn’t s... moreo much finish it as skim to the end. The characters in this story are incredibly pathetic and horrible things happen to them for no reason. The characters also withheld information from the audience without clear reason beyond artificially heightening tension and creating “surprise” moments. The identity and reveal of the killers was practically a deus ex machina. The characters were pathetic and horrible. They had zero agency. Anything and everything they did, when they bothered to attempt anything, only made everything worse. They didn’t discover anything. They had discoveries thrust upon them. I can sum Dark Places up with one word: Nihilistic.
review 2: I Read Sharp Objects first followed by Dark Places. I really liked Sharp Objects, and I liked Dark Places but for some reason found it harder to get through than Sharp Objects and Gone Girl. I didn't like the premise as much I guess, and the animal cruelty was sickening. I understand it fueled the story line, but it was really hard to read and I'm not squeamish. I guess when it comes to murder I'm OK but senseless animal cruelty/murder I'm not! Not sure what that says about ME though! The story in both books moves quickly, keeps you guessing, and just when you know you know who did it... the ending will surprise you. Sort of. If you are a fan of Gone Girl you should give these a read. less

Very dark heroines, which is a staple of Flynn's books, but overall a good read/mystery novel.
