review 1: I'm doing a book review on The Outside of a Horse by Ginny Rorby. This book was recommended to my by, my sister. She is a big fan of horses and books(kinda like me) so no wonder she liked this book. The main character is Hannah Gale, 13 years old. She lives with her stepmother, this isn't one of those even stepmother books her stepmother is actually nice, also there's her baby brother. Hannah's mom died from cancer five years ago and her dad is fighting in Iraq. Personally I can't even imagine how hard dealing with that would be I would feel alone, sad.....Hannah always liked horses when she was younger, her dad would tell her the stories of him breaking wild mustangs in Nevada. Being with horses made her feel closer with her father. Her school bus passed a ranch everyday, ... moreso she decides one day to see if they would hirer her. Hannah likes horses but she has never been in contact with one, she doesn't understand them totally. When she applies for a job, even though they weren't asking for help and she fakes her age. She gets a job but she doesn't get payed but each month she gets a free riding lesson. She doesn't care as long as she is with horses. Dillon the owner of the stable and Meg, boarder and Sophie saves horses all come into Hannah's life. Then her dad comes home and he's missing a leg below the knee and suffers from post traumatic stress disorder, from the war. Hannah's world that is already crazy is turned upside down her closes person in her life gets drunk half the time, prowls the house during the night, has panic attacks, stops caring about a lot of things in life, and is missing a leg. Instead of her dad caring for her, she starts caring for her dad. I don't want to say anymore because it will spoil more than I already have. The theme of this book is no matter how hard things are at this moment that they can always get worse, but eventually through time it will improve. I rated the way I did because its inspiring me of what I can do at my age I don't have to wait. Ginny Rorby is a great author and her style and ideas in her book just make me want to read more and her image that she draws for the beauty of horses and how they can help us is amazing.
review 2: A great readfor anyone who loves horses. I really enjoyed Hannah. She had such a sweet spirit, yet sheseemed totally realistic. I loved that the horse training emphasis was on using gentle methods and on understanding the horse mind. I work with a horse rescue and alsoown a nurse mare foal - anotherof the sad casualties of the thoroughbred racing industry. I would have given a higher rating had the author not used such graphic descriptions of slaughter and abuse that happens. I understand, yet I wish it had been less graphic.I would recommend for an older teenage girl and warn her about the abuse content. less
