review 1: This book was on the MO Truman Award list for 2013-14 and I had bought a copy last fall in the our book fair. I wasn't sure if I would like it, but was pleasantly surprised. This was not a feel good book since it deals with peer pressure and survival, but I am glad Sarah went on the journey with Andy. Getting lost in the Everglades was probably the best thing that happened to her even though I wouldn't recommend it for any of my students.Sarah was able to show how strong she was in order to survive in the wild. Andy was great at getting her think outside the box. Her opinion changed of the Everglades and every living thing that resides there. I felt sorry for the ducks that she ran over while driving the airboat, but I am glad she was able to save one. Teapot was a ... morebonus character that helped the serious story become a little less serious at times. My favorite quote from the book was "The great white hunter and his faithful duck scout." It was comical to imagine this scene. My least favorite part of the story is when Sarah wakes up thinking Andy is tickling her and it turns out to be cockroaches (palmetto bugs)....ugghhhhh. I am not a bug fan and definitely not a cockroach fan. I could visualize this scene while reading and remember camping as a Girl Scout and finding bugs in my sleeping bag....Ewww.Overall, this book was a good story with enough interesting sections to keep my middle school students engaged. I am glad it is on the list.
review 2: Sarah is the new girl at school and goes on an overnight field trip to the Everglades with her favorite teacher. At this private school, Sarah is there on scholarship for swimming, and the girls have not accepted her. Sarah decides to play sick so that she can go out on an airboat with Andy, the self-described redneck. They get stranded out there and have to overcome the dangers of the Everglades (gators, snakes, neverending water) to make it back home. The book plays out somewhat predictability. The book is filled with science lessons about the Everglades; there is also a subplot of overcoming prejudice. Overall, a not exciting but not bad read. This book is part of the Battle of the Books 2013-14 competition. less

I didn't enjoy the character in the beginning, but near the end I decided they were okay.
