review 1: In this rendition of Batwoman by Greg Rucka and JH Williams III, fans of Kate Kane receive the full origin story for this Gotham heroine. A former soldier, Kane is forced to leave the Military Academy after her sexuality is revealed. Haunted by the death of her mother and twin sister, she is driven by a need to follow her father's military career. Now that she can no longer do so, she takes to the street and adopts the name Batwoman to tenuously associate herself with Gotham's most renowned vigilante. Before the end of this volume she must face a lunatic villain inspired by Lewis Carroll, and tackle a ghost from her own past.
review 2: Batwoman, as written by Greg Rucka, is a remarkably human character. Yes, like most mainstream costumed heroes, she's a bit of ... morea Mary Sue, what with the seemingly endless resources and phenomenal fighting ability, but she comes across as an authentic person, both in and out of the cape. The fact that she is a lesbian is treated simply as a facet of her character that shapes her relationship with the world, not as some sort of tokenish attempt at political correctness, as I'm sure some would see it. Oh, and the art? just spectacular. Every image jumps out at you with power and grace. Killing this title (a move that I view as bowing to perceived political pressure) was a colossal idiocy on DC's part. less
