review 1: I can't believe I put off reading this simply because I don't dig Batman that much. It's not about Batman at all. Or Catwoman. Mostly (for me) it's about Renee Montoya, a cop with a bad attitude and anger management issues who also happens to be queer. The queer elements play a part of the story without making her into an after school special. Can't wait to read the older Gotham Central books now...and Rucka's Stumptown.
review 2: On the Freak Beat takes a slight step down in quality from the first two Gotham Central HC volumes. Plots remain reasonably compelling, and the characters remain strong, but there are some missteps along the way, especially in the later episodes. Michael Lark bows out after "Lights Out," and is replaced by Stefano Gaudiano and, in the
... more title story, Jason Alexander. Alexander's art is an awkward fit, and is especially poor at communicating appropriate facial expressions. Characters often look stoned or drunk, when they should be conveying curiosity or intelligence. Gaudiano's work on "Keystone Kops" is more akin to Lark's, but Rucka's storyline is uncharacteristically weak. In essence, it is an extended rip-off of The Silence of the Lambs, complete with "quid pro quo" and a daring, in-transit escape attempt. Really amateur stuff, surprisingly. Rucka works in one or two nice moments involving Renee Montoya's strained relationship with her father, but it's too little to salvage a shoddy plot. less

Third hardcover collection of a great crime series that just happens to be set in Gotham.

I wrote a brief little thing about this series in the entry for volume 1.

Brilliant stuff. Honed to perfection. Not a line or word out of place.
