Attack on Titan
review 1: Another interesting turn in the narrative. We discover that the Survey Corps knows more than they are letting on to the general population. This volume suffers a bit from EPIC SHONEN BATTLE syndrome. They trickle a little bit of story out to you and spend most of the book in a complex, perspective-shifting battle. More named characters die. But in general, the tension holds and the mystery of the titans deepen effectively.
review 2: I may be a tiny bit biased on this volume because it happens to take place during my favorite story arc, and I just had to own it. Volume 6 is the other part of the story arc, and I plan to own that one soon as well. I think volume 7 has some really powerful parts. Armin, my sweet baby, makes me love him all the more with his ins
... moreight. Then Eren shows brilliant character development. Of course, there is angst galore as well. Levi reveals great character, and I'm tired of being vague, so I'm going on to specifics.SPOILERSOne) Speaking honestly, I ship Jearmin, so that may be why I love this arc so much. Through circumstances, Jean and Armin are stuck together as they follow their orders. Armin reveals just how clever and brave he is, and I think Jean realizes for the first time that Armin is much more than the weakest soldier. He may not have physical strength, but he more than makes up for it with intelligence. Also, Armin reveals an understanding and ruthlessness one wouldn't expect from the cute little blond. He is more than willing to sacrifice humans for the prize, and he gives a powerful speech, saying that one has to throw everything away to change anything.I think Jean and Armin balance each other out well. While Armin looks at the bigger picture, Jean sees things from a more immediate standpoint. He looks at the lost lives of soldiers, and that's very important. Armin looks at how the lost lives benefit humanity, and that's important, too. I think they'd be a great team together. Two) I have a great respect for Erwin. I can definitely understand how some would call him heartless, but he really is doing what needs to be done for humanity. He makes the tough decisions when no one else will, and he's not afraid to get his hands dirty. In that way, Levi makes a good right hand man. You can tell they both trust each other and respect each other's judgment. Levi is also willing to do anything for the cause, and can we just appreciate Levi sass? Three) I think the loss of Levi's squad may be one of the most traumatizing parts in the series. They're such powerful soldiers. They keep fighting no matter what, and they know each other so well that they don't even have to speak to understand the attack. Still, it was not enough, and they each fell. Poor Eren will live the rest of the life in regret because he thinks he made the wrong decision and it cost the squad their lives. Then Levi. The poor guy. All his friends, his teammates, all wiped out in a few minutes, and he wasn't there to help them. He may not show it on the outside, but I know it must be eating him alive. Four) Mikasa and Levi fighting together was a dream come true. Levi is the strongest human alive, and he just found out all his squad has been murdered. Mikasa graduated top of her class, and her sole purpose in life has been kidnapped. The battle was epic. Even though Mikasa doesn't like Levi and resents him, they still work well together and rescue Eren. So now I guess I better save more money, so I can buy the rest of the mangas as I cry over each chapter that updates. less
