Attack on Titan
review 1: It opens with a tease: Ilse Langnar, a Survey corps member, encounters a Titan that speaks, saying 'Lady Ymir' among a few other things. A year later Levi and Zoe find all that's left of her, the journal she chronicled the meeting in just before she's eaten. Then it flashes back to the present. Eren meets Zoe Hange, a survey member and what passes for a biologist. She escorts him to his trial where he is shackled on his knees in front of pretty much everyone in town and beyond. To his horror, the military police want him destroyed as do many politicians. The hither-to unseen priesthood is there to ask for his death. Even the merchants throw in their two cents. Even worse people seem determined to drag Armin and especially Mikasa into this, hinting they could be killed as we... morell. Only Erwin and the Survey corp speak up for Eren.Eren's temper finally gets them better of him and he blows, trying to defend himself. It's the opening Captain Levi is waiting for, kicking the shit (and a tooth) out of Eren, proving he can handle Eren and that Eren isn't an out of control monster since the beating doesn't make Eren shift into being a Titan. The judge gives Eren to the Survey corps. Zoe is thrilled, especially when Eren's tooth regrows (Levi looks more disgusted).Eren is taken to a new hideout and we learn Levi really is a miniscule clean freak. Zoe, on the other hand, is borderline crazy. She introduces Eren to the Titans they have captive and she is experimenting on (sometimes violently). There is a rather long and drawn out chapter of all the characters we've seen training with Eren pick what part of the military they want to be in and all the angst that goes with that but eventually it concentrates on the survey corps since that's where Eren (and of course, Mikasa and Armin) are.On their first mission Armin encounters an abnormal, intelligent Titan and does what he does best: thinks it through then deduces she's like Eren for all the good it will do him with this cliffhanger. The art is beginning to improve at long last. It was the trial in the anime that made me give this whole thing a second change. The story is beginning to really hit its stride now.
review 2: Still not quite to where the anime and the manga diverge in plot, but it's still good, art style notwithstanding. The scene where Levi beats Eren up doesn't quite pack as much of a punch as it does in the anime, but it's still pretty intense. Also, Mikasa threatening to get revenge on Levi for that is hardcore. I really like this part of the story - getting outside the walls - and since I already had the basic story in my head, the plot progression makes more sense than it did before.Hanji is a beautiful crazy person, and the trio of Irwin, Hanji, and Levi is just overall fantastic. I also like the looks we get at some of the more minor characters - Connie, Sasha, Jean, and especially Annie. And of course now we're getting into the part of the story where Armin gets even more important, which is definitely okay with me. The Female Titan is the freakiest, scariest villain in anime I've ever encountered. She just is. less
