review 1: Britten is a depressed private detective who hates his life, mainly because he's known for delivering news that ends marriages, a fact that has earned him the nickname of "The Heartbreaker". Brulightly is his partner, a lecherous tea bag that sometimes has a good idea. The latest case involves a wealthy young woman who hires Britten to prove her fiance didn't commit suicide, as she believes he was murdered by the same someone who was blackmailing her father. The detectives quickly find that everyone the woman knows has something to hide.A graphic novel, noir style. The mystery holds til the very end, where there are not one, but two twists. The artwork is mostly shades of gray, with Britten himself being a raccoon-eyed fellow who dresses like Gomez A... moredams.
review 2: The plot of this book was fabulous, and I have zero criticism of the writing. It is insightful, and shows the side of detective stories that is rarely explored by authors in the genre: the impact the knowledge has on the lives of those who hire private investigators.The art is a little bit shaky at times. The character design is lovely, with the exaggerated features that make them distinct. But there were times where I felt Berry was still learning how to draw a character from different angles. Which is understandably difficult. The other criticism is the lettering. It is lettered by hand (which is fabulous in and of itself) but a lot of the placement seemed like it wasn't very well thought out.BUT! I thoroughly enjoyed it. less
