review 1: This book was so much better than the previous one, which I loathed. I'm so glad that there was a semblance of why these two people would fall in love with each other. It was nice of Olympia to not fall for him instantly. I still think the relationships aren't as well developed but in relation to the books in the series, it really was. I can buy that they fell for each other while they worked together on foiling Lady Mallam's evil plan. The story follows Brant and Olympia. Agatha is in the process of being sold to an old man with syphilis, who believed that a virgin would cure him of the disease. Agatha came for Ashton but found Olympia. Her brother had not been answering her letters for help and she needs help locating him. She needs him to stop her mother's plan. Olympia ... morepromised to go and help her. In this endeavour, she found Brant in a bad way. He had been drowning in drink to bury his grief. In the process, he had been letting himself go. His household is filled with his mother's spies and his reputation is in tatters. Olympia gave him the nudge to break out of his grief and get his life together. The task of informing him of his sister's demise wasn't so simple. The more they tried to wrest control from Lady Mallam, the more they discover about her crimes and the more they had to do to make amends. The biggest one being, human trafficking. His mother had been selling his tenants into plantations and brothels. She had also been blackmailing high ranking officials into doing her deeds such as gaining custody of houses and her children. Together, Brant and Olympia tackle the clusterfuck that is Brant's life. As usual, there are some glaring flaws throughout the book. The hero waffles with his feelings. It isn't until the heroine's life is threatened that he makes up his mind that he loves her. However, the biggest one is his naivete towards his mother. He takes her at his word that she would leave without a fuss. Why doesn't he take his sister away immediately? He knows that she sells people. It was TSTL moment for him. I just hate these devices because they are more of a device to move the plot along rather than a natural characteristic. For god's sake, what else does she have to do for you to be wary of her. I just did not get the logic of leaving her weeks to plan in the house and leaving your sister there. He spends the entire book uncovering his mother's crimes and still he leaves her there. It is just inconceivable. In spite of these flaws, the book is still entertaining. It is a marked improvement from the last book which was just grating to read. At least there is a partnership between Brant and Olympia. I really liked Olympia. She was strong and she was intelligent. I liked that she had a son and raised him as opposed to the men who just gave them away. She actually embodied her principles and she was a refreshing heroine. What I liked most about her is that she did not clap eyes on him and declared him her soulmate. I could have done without her feeling jealous instantly over her memory but it was alright. She could have been a lot worse and she wasn't. Overall, this book was entertaining. Story Brief: Olympia agrees to help Agatha. Olympia goes to Brant's house. She beats up his butler, meets Thomas, beats up the cook for hitting Thomas and wakes Brant from his grief. It was also eventful for Brant. He fires his staff, discovers his many half-siblings, and discovers that his mother was still selling people for money. He travels to London where he finds that his reputation barred him from much of society. Olympia offers him a place to stay. Together, they piece together his life all the while facing Lady Mallam's attempt to keep him down so there won't be a challenge to her power. She blackened Brant's name and then Olympia's. Meanwhile, Brant and Olympia had been taking down a brothel and taking in the children imprisoned there. They gain an ally by rescuing a lost marquess' son. Olympia's son gets attacked but he attacks back. Brant gains custody of his sister and the house. Lady Mallam goes ahead with the sale. They save his sister. He evicts his mother and she is prepared to shoot him. She gives a long winded speech giving Olympia time to climb the window. Olympia gets shot and Lady Mallam gets shot by Paul. Olympia recovers. Brant proposes to her. She refuses telling him he needs to get rid of his guilt that had been eating away at him. He does and proposes again a month later. She accepts. She is pregnant.
review 2: Another very evil woman who happens to be the mother of the hero is the driving force in this story. Brandt was introduced in "If He's Sinful". The cover of this book grabbed my attention and before I knew it I had bought all five in the series. I have loved each and every one. I must say that I was slightly, only slightly, disappointed in how Brandt didn't come to life as much as I thought he would based on his history. Not a complete disappointment though and maybe my expectations were unrealistic. (Matthew in Sinful by Charlotte Featherstone is hard to match).Olympia is a great heroine. I loved her. She never wallowed in self-flagellation which can get tedious. There was a lot less of the family and their gifts in this story. Most of them were out-of-town. I even thought that Olympia's gift was under utilized. There were a lot of children involved in the story and they were a balance to the evil. Plus the kitten, Lure, and her adoptive mother, Dinner, gave levity.Would really like more stories about this family, especially Modred who was missing in this one, in the future. less
