review 1: I read this for a new book club. The main character drove me nuts - I found her story simplistic and unrealistic. And I thought the idea of a village with no wifi and only one guy with a laptop unrealistic. I visited my fair share of remote villages in Ireland and Scotland over a decade ago and I find that unbelievable. But the back stories of the other women of the lace making circle were interesting. I read it on a day while breastfeeding the baby and I'm glad it was a quick read.
review 2: This is a quiet, gentle story about a young woman named Kate who travels to Ireland to get away from a failed relationship and a dying career as a dress designer. She is also mourning the loss of her mother in the previous year. With no clear direction, Kate accepts a ride
... more from a Traveler, a gypsy in Ireland, and is put down at the village of Glenmara. She arrives on market day, and meets a group of women who are engaged in making and selling traditional Irish lace. Cold, wet, hungry, Kate is taken in by one of the women, and so begins the transformation of the village women lacemakers and of Kate. The story contains an element of the fabulous, but it is so mild and ambiguous that the two or three incidents in which it occurs could be read in different ways. The transformations that take place are, however, the result of alterations in each woman's character and feeling. With a steady deepening of relationships and understanding, Kate uses her skills as a dress designer to bring the women's lacemaking tradition into the modern world. There is a thread of romance between Kate and a village man, but this is not a romance novel. Each woman's life problems have an appropriate ending, and all are not happy but all are true to the life of the village and the circumstances of the families. less

I would give this book a 3.5. It's a wonderful summer read, especially if one has no summer travel plans. You can go to Ireland through this book. The story is pretty predictable and not any doubt where it is going. But the author has a nice gift for making you see the green hills, the cliffs and hear the sea. Serious literature it is not but I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who likes a romance or wants to experience a bit of Ireland.

What a wonderful book! I have been to Ireland before, and after reading Lace Makers I want to go again. Lace Makers stayed true to the Irish people and their culture.I loved this book, the characters, the setting and the plot. It drew me in from the beginning and kept me until the end. I couldn't wait to finish it and yet at the same time hated for it to end.I recommend it highly.

2.5 stars. I loved the description of the Irish village, but the storyline didn't draw me in.

Not too bad, some parts predictable. All and all a good read.
