review 1: I usually love Heather Graham books, but this one was hard for me to finish. I could not seem to get into either the story line or the characters themselves. The story is about a female vampire, living in the South during the Civil War who wanted to protect President Lincoln and a member of his security team who is trying to track down threats to President Lincoln. Ms. Graham did a good job with her descriptions of locations and her characters, but this story is one that just didn't "speak" to me. Hopefully, the next Heather Graham that I pick up will.FTC Notice: I obtained an electronic copy of this book via NetGalley.
review 2: Heather Graham is an expert in historical romance. Her descriptions make the reader feel like s/he is really there. Having grown
... moreup in the Gettysburg area and with a father who was a local historian, I know something about this era and Heather doesn't disappoint. Her characters are realistic and well drawn out with problems and issues that make them "human" - even when they aren't. If I had any issues with the characters, it was that Finn seemed to give in too easily to Tara sometimes, but then, he didn't have much of a choice. Tara and Finn are a good team. As a Pinkerton agent, Finn prides himself in his attention to detail and duty. Unfortunately for him, Tara has a tendency to shatter his focus - which makes for great conflict between them. Tara's survival instincts and vampirism are at odds with her seeming naivety, but that only makes her more likeable. As far as paranormal romances go, this one is a good one. Add in that it is also a historical written by one of the best historical romance writers out there, and you have a very well written story. Recommended to those who like a little paranomal with their history - or a little history with their vampires. Thank you to Harlequin and Netgalley for providing this ARC for review less
