review 1: 3.5 stars really..This was a quick read, maybe because it is a stand alone and not part of a trilogy or series but it almost felt like a novella to me. I was quite taken with the spin the author has put on the mythology around the main character Medusa. It was enjoyable and a right mix of romance and humor though I wish it had some more action. The pace is good, there is enough that is happening to keep you engaged and the relationship between Dusa & Hermes is cute. That being said, it's just that.. cute .. I have have read other chemistries and book couples that I find more engaging (think Ondine Quarted and Iron Fey series) and even though we do see some of the inner struggles of Dusa, it just didnt overly wow me.The ending was lovely, Im always a sucker for happy endings ... moreand this one did not disappoint. What I was missing though, was some more insight into Posseidon. I realise the nature of the crime does not leave for much sympathy yet I think he kind of needed a bigger part in the story.
review 2: The Deep End of the Sea was a very refreshing twist on the tale of Medusa. When I met the lovely Heather Lyons at a book con, she told me that she had always felt bad for Medusa, so she wrote a happy ending for her. That is exactly what she did. Medusa's story starts with the one we all know, and then progresses into one in which we have never heard. Hermes is the male interest, and throughout the story, we can easily see the two falling in love. I enjoyed this book very much, and I think that Heather has a beautiful writing style. The reason that I did not give this story five stars, is because of the romance. The majority was very mature and detailed. Many people love things like this, but I saw some of it to be unnecessary. Also, the gods saying that they "only fell in love once" tends to go completely against half of the legitimate greek myths. I enjoyed the characters, the dialogue, and the plot. Medusa was a very likable character, and I wanted her to have a happily ever after from the very start of the book. I will definitely be reading more of this author's work. less
