review 1: Miles Larson leaves his depressing life in Atlanta for Minnesota, which is no less depressing. Miles feels like the world would be a better place without him, that his life has no meaning. He works at a pawn shop owned by his lesbian friends, but overall, he's miserable with his existence. It's when he's in the woods behind the shop that he feels most alive. Strange things start happening in his life that make Miles question his sanity. First there is the ring he finds, then the flute that is sold to the pawnshop by the town bully. Miles is also having very realistic waking dreams and hearing voices, seeing things, sometimes terrible things. Though his mind and his friends tell him it's just dreams, they are so realistic and lasting that he doubts everything. As the line be... moretween reality and fantasy blur, Miles becomes more depressed, feeling more alive and at home within the "dreams" he is having. Finally convinced that the dreams are real and he's found the love of his life within them, Miles takes drastic measures to try to save the man he knows only as Harry and make the dreams a reality. When Miles world, the Fae world, reality and conscience collide, the results are devastating. And when Miles awakes on the floor of the shop alone, he is literally more alone than ever. There was a lot going on in this story. Aspects taken from Beauty and the Beast, The Chronicles of Narnia blended with Fae and given a slightly psychotic gay twist. Sadly, in the end, it left me very confused and dizzy. That being said, I was completely engaged throughout, even if it was an odd story at times. I loved the moral of the story as well. Words have power and when you use them constantly as a negative, along with the negative thoughts in your head and in your heart, your life is not going to be a good one. Miles has to learn this the hard way.So, while this story left me scratching my head a little, I saw the potential there and I'm anxious to read more from this author. If you are a fan of fantasy stories, fairy tales and stories that make you think, then this would be an excellent choice for you.*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
review 2: I was confused, much like Miles himself. I didn't know what to think about what was real and what wasn't but I liked it. Miles himself was a little to egocentric for my liking but I guess he had to be since that was part of the story. What I never really figured out though was if his time in Atlanta was real or a dream. Terris said it was a dream and his friends acted as if he'd never existed but the people in his hometown said that he had been there...confusing. less
