review 1: This is an engaging, enjoyable story with some (eventual) hot sex (It's Heidi and Marie, so of course there is!)Paul is kind of clueless and a bit at sea, he's not where he wants to be in terms of career and relationship. He heads into the Tucker Springs pawn shop to find a piece of jewelry he can afford in the hope of winning back his ex girlfriend. Instead he starts up a relationship with El Rozal, the owner. El keeps the world at arm's length, he sees his family and friends and all of their issues and prefers to observe from the sidelines. He is engaged by Paul, but Paul is straight.... maybe. This is a slow build and you really get a feel for the town and the relationships Paul and El have (Paul with his ex, the vet he works for and his mother and El with his fami... morely and his pal Denver). There is some inner turmoil but no unbelievable angst. I look forward to Denver's story in Book 3.
review 2: Light and sweetWarning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS. Rating: 7/10PROS: - The setting is sweet: a small town with a relaxed feel about it and full of eclectic residents.- A lot of characters in m/m books are close to perfect: physically, emotionally, financially…they’re in a good place. I don’t mind reading about such characters, but it’s also nice to read the occasional story like this one, about people who are poor or who have family members with mental illness. I like the reality of stories like this one.- El’s patience with Paul is endearing, especially when we start seeing that all El wants to do is tear Paul’s clothes off every time he sees the other man.CONS:- I didn’t like that Paul’s scenes are in first person and El’s are in third. I had to pause and reorient myself at the start of every chapter.- I found El’s manipulations and Paul’s utter cluelessness sort of cute and sort of irritating. It wasn’t long before I wanted them to stop dancing around each other and just get on with it.- It bugged the crud out of me that Paul allows his ex-girlfriend to treat him the way she does.Overall comments: This is a light, easy read--very little angst, and what’s there isn’t earth-shattering or longstanding. The relationship is sweet and forms slowly, with tentative affection on both sides. This is the first book I’ve read in the Tucker Springs series, but I like the idea and the setting well enough to try others. less

Was anyone else really bothered by the inner chipmunk? Felt a bit like reading an inner goddess.

3.5. - Sweet but to fluffy for me. To be a good partner you have to know who you are.
