review 1: This may be the first urban fantasy book I've listened to that was set in the UK rather than the US, so of course I enjoyed the sound of the narrator's voice. I enjoyed the story as well, particularly with the variety of shape shifter types and the fact that Mack's "blood fire" has an interesting origin. The descriptions of the keep and forest were vivid enough that I can still see them in my mind, but the other world through the portal is a complete blank, except for the door to nowhere (which was a funny touch). I can only guess that the other world won't factor much into the next book in the series, since it was so underwhelming. I definitely appreciated the fact that Mack's pack had a female alpha for a while, but I don't get why the Lord Alpha of the Brethern neve... morer caught on to Mack's secret. If the mage knew right away, how could an alpha miss it? (Speaking of the mage, I enjoyed the image of him as a "surfer dude.")Overall, although I enjoyed the first story, I'm not sure there's enough in this world to draw me back for the second book. Well, maybe my fascination with dragons will be enough :-)
review 2: Even though Mac is a bit dense about her nature I like the character quite a lot. Mac is a "human" raised among shifters since she was about 7 or so. Mysteriously dropped off with a pack by her mother who then disappeared forever. Thing is she has learned to fight and can beat most of the various shifters by calling on an internal heat from her blood that focuses and strengthens her. Still, she doesn't have any of the healing abilities all shifters have and she and the pack keep her human nature hidden because it is a death sentence for a human to know about shifters, Faye, Vampires, etc. Mac's Alpha is killed suddenly and the head of the shifters bring his people to investigate the rural English pack and Mac is in serious danger of being outed which could result in everyone she knows being killed and made an example.Mac's fears aside you really don't get the sense that would really happen particularly since there is absolutely no way she is human no matter how she smells. It seems she is 1/8th Draco-were but has no dragon form or particular power but her blood is a definite commodity as a demi-god is after her and killing all in her path to get Mac's blood. Why she doesn't just tell the Lord Alpha this would probably shorten the series considerably and what fun would that be? Anyway I'm intrigued by the character and enjoying her journey. On to book two! less

Good read but slow at getting to some of the action and a little predictable.
