review 1: Read the audio version of this book. It's worth it. The story is good by itself, but Steve West adds something to it, and he makes me forget I'm listening in my car or while jogging, and instead makes me think that I'm laying by the pool or at the beach at the Magda Marina Hotel in Cairo. The sun warming my skin and the breeze moving the palm fronds in unison. There's an air of mystery and suspense to this whole book, but don't read it expecting any type of answers. The book is not about the mystery, but more of a coming-of-age story. I'm really looking forward to reading other Hisham Matar's books.
review 2: Definitely a very intense read. The pace at which Matar writes this tale is breakneck - I finished all but 55 pages of it within hours. It literally ... moregrips you, and doesn't let you go until the last page. However, I kept turning page after page expecting what I hoped to be the outcome, to not ever occur. This book has many emotions and moods that fade in and out like colors of a spectrum wheel - gradually morphing from one to the next. Happiness to Morose moods that paint the pages better than the words themselves. You can feel it in your heart, Atleast, I could. The emotion of the characters stick with you, with the way Matar crafts this tale. It's one that I hope to read again, when I've long forgotten it's secrets. less
