review 1: Gave it 3 and half stars. I did like the story, and do plan on reading the next. Peyton has just gotten out of a terrible marriage. She decides she needs something to occupy her mind, a historic beaten down mansion is just the thing. However having a past residential ghost wasn't on the menu.Drake wants Payton to investigate some murders by the Axeman that were never solved in the past. She also has the hots for Ryan her contractor. Problem is the Axeman is not in the past anymore.
review 2: 4.5 stars. Peyton Clark has no connection to her personal past, save for the monstrosity of a haunted house that she has inherited from an aunt she never knew about. What made this fun for me was how individual belief systems about all things paranormal collided. It... more was funny to see Ryan believe in ghosts before Peyton, when it's usually the woman trying to convince the man...followed by some flip flopping. Then there were the dangerous amateur attempts -- everyone knows the danger of Ouiji boards -- followed by a call to the pros. The book stays light on romance, but the scene where Peyton seduces Ryan (to renovate her house) is fantastic. She is completely herself and breaks all the rules of classic seduction to win herself a contractor. My only complaint is that the relationship with Drake needed to be earned a bit more. Meeting a couple of times should not have made her so committed so fast. I needed a little more development in that area to justify her actions in regard to Drake at the end. less
