review 1: I've been known to many people as someone who loves the Gypsy culture. Well most of it anyway. I go to the Ren Faire every year dressed to the nines in my Gypsy Fortune Teller dress and I have a ball. I loved this book because it gave me insight into the struggles that these people had in Spain. It was a well researched book and I loved the detail that made me feel as though I was really there watching the story unfold. What I didn't enjoy so much was all the attention paid to rape and abuse. I'm positive these things happened back then as much as they do now, maybe even more so. But there was almost no emotional effect on the characters. They took it and then acted as though they were violated. With such great detail to everything else I hoped for more about the emotional ... moreaffects of their treatment to be more displayed.Overall it was a great book and I know a couple people I will recommend this too.
review 2: So, there's kind of a story on how I got this book. I don't normally read secular adult fiction, but blogginforbooks.com didn't really have any Christian fiction I was interested in at the moment, so I was browsing all their other books when this title caught my eye. I clicked on it to learn more, and when I did it showed "other books you may like" and all of them were Christian historical fiction. So, thinking this book was going to be along those lines, I chose it.Never had I made a bigger mistake. I didn't even get past the second chapter. It was just unbelievably vulgar and I immediately shut the book and put it away. I will not be picking it up again. It's a terrible disappointment, because this book is beautiful. It's a gorgeous, hugely thick (over 600 pages!) hardcover and it's worth nearly $30 bucks. But aside from lovely packaging, I can't recommend this book at all. Maybe it gets significantly better later on, but I'll never find out.I received this book for free from bloggingforbooks.com in exchange for my honest review. less
