review 1: I'm normally not a big fan of short stories, but Ilona Andrews writes some fantastic stuff. This is a short is about Grace Mailliard, a headhunter with a small magical ability. She is told by her Uncle that their family is in service to the Dreoch family. If a Dreoch asks a Mailliard to perform a service, the Mailliard can be killed by the other family if they refuse. When her Uncle explains this to Grace, he also tells her that her mother is currently with the Dreoch family. The Dreoch family wants to exchange Grace for her mother & only Grace is capable of performing what they need.Grace flies to meet this other family, sees that her mother is released. She meets Nassar Dreoch. There is an initial attraction between them, but Grace is calmly angry over this servitude of he... morer family. When she explains to the Dreoch family that she will end the servitude by not continuing the Mailliard line, the Dreochs are astounded.Grace & Nassar begin training her magics to where she can protect Nassar during a 'wargame' type event the Dreoch's will be having with another magical family. The "wargame" is to same Nassar's neice & nephew from having to go live with their abusive father. It's a sweet & imaginative paranormal/magic story with a strong female heroine. Non-erotica.Satisfying HEA.
review 2: I think this is probably the 3rd time I've read this story which originally appeared in one of the Mammoth books of Paranormal Romance (and later in the anthology Under Her Skin) and I've liked it every time that I've read it. Andrews writes a good short story, and I really like Grace whose 'small' magic turns out to be bigger than she thought but whose spirit and intelligence is really the thing that allows her to become powerful in a situation where she is initially at a disadvantage. I also really loved Nassar - the underlying sadness in him is very appealing, as is the fact that he is a truly honorable person in spite of the fact that he is a 'monster'. If I had a nit with the story - and this is just my reader greed speaking - I'd have loved just a bit more of Nassar's emotion before the fade to black at the end, but that is really just a nit. less
