review 1: I am a huge fan of Irene Hannon and LOVE her Christian romantic suspense books. I was not sure how well I would like That Certain Summer. I consider it to be more family drama than romance. I was drawn in by the characters and read the story in less than 24 hours...You can see my full review at More Than a Review dot com where I rate the level of sex, violence, language and drug/alcohol use in books.
review 2: I had a hard time getting myself to pick this book up & get started reading. I'm not sure why as I love Irene Hannon's suspense books. This isn't the first of hers I've read that wasn't a suspense story either. But it only took a few words before I was hooked as usual. I'm so glad I read it! *Mild Spoilers*. I was afraid from the description that Karen &
... moreVal would fight for a good part of the book. I was pleasantly surprised when they started to become friends fairly soon. I really enjoyed their growing relationship, how Karen learned how to stand up for herself, and how Val learned how to give her guilt to the Lord. The guys in the book were great also. Even though both had faced tough times, David leaned on The Lord & Scott learned to. I also like the fact that once Scott started coming out of his despair & depression - both understandable after what he'd been through - reaching out to help others was what helped him to heal. Another thing I liked was that when the relationship between her parents was explained to her, Karen's daughter understood. Even though she continued to love her dad she stopped hoping that they would get back together. I thought also that the way Karen & Michael's relationship at the end of the book was handled well. It's so hard for me to fathom such a critical mom, as Karen & Val's is. It was nice to get an explanation for her attitude, & see a little bit of improvement! I really enjoyed this book & will definitely re-read it one day. less
