review 1: People are whining because it was like Trainspotting. Which i loved. So, at the very worst, it's a book that's like a book i loved. i took the risk. i won't review it in depth, because the chances of someone giving a shit are slim and because even if you knew me really well the chances of being able to explain how my head processed this piece of literature are non-existent. Irvine Welsh is not an author that relies on good reviews to sell copies. You either like his stuff and read it all, even the "bad" ones, or you get offended halfway through one of them, embark on an anti-Welsh campaign, slandering his name whenever it's mentioned, and vow to boycott your book club if they even try to suggest one of his works. Life has a way of working out, regardless. Good s... moretuff.
review 2: I haven't read anything by Irvine Welsh before, but definitely will now. This book shows a great combination of demonstration of objective conditions and personal narratives, makes you love the antiheroes even as they make choices more and more terrible, and then is unexpectedly hilarious just as you thought the hell was all that is ever going to exist. There are some great, yet not too obtrusive, metaphors (eg the obvious tree felling, freedom of choice, etc), and I find no fault with the at-first confusing writing style. The Scottish dialect was daunting at first, but I got used to it after a while, and I am not even a native speaker of English. less
