review 1: What a wonderful surprise hidden on my kindle. I picked this in Bordeaux at random from the long list on my kindle thinking it might be a light read. Nothing light about it! What wonderful writing, the author really pulled me in. I was reading in France and on a flight home via Amsterdam ( appropriate as one of the main characters was Dutch) but I was really in Java sharing the horrors of war with Klara. I loved her character and that of Evie, the ghost writer, and how both women came to terms with their pasts. I was sorry to finish it but also glad as both for closure and moved on. A truly wonderful book.

... moreund the detail too disturbing to read and skimmed over big sections to preserve my sleep. The remainder of the storyline was slightly more tolerable, although were it not for my professional training, that too would undoubtedly have been troubling. So, overall, a dark read and not one I'd recommend for the sensitive. less
