review 1: I'm a 50/50 guy when it comes to JA Konrath / Jack Kilborn. Some of his books I love, like Origin and Endurance, others I feel were so rushed they're more like a first draft of an outline. Unfortunately for me Haunted House fell into this category with the first half of the book spent just getting the characters to the Mansion and then throwing so much shock-horror at you without any development that I had a tough time finishing it. I did, not sure it was worth it however. That being said, this sort of writing has its place and I'm sure there are others out there who loved it. For this book however, I'm not one of them.
review 2: not a bad book, but far from award winning. I gave this book 4 stars because I sort of had an idea of what I was getting into. I knew... more this wasn't going to be a complex horror novel and I was ok with that. if you are a fan of splatterpunk then this book is for you. a lot of gory violence with shallow characters and pure evil bad guys. if you need something quick, easy and fairly entertaining (and don't mind blood and guts) read this. less
