review 1: Laatusarjakuvaa. Ajoittain ehkä kaipasin jonkinlaista tarinaa ja dialogia tapahtumien tarkastelun ja kerronnan sekaan. Ihan toimiva ratkaisu tämä ranskalaisen sotilaan kertojana ja sodan hulluuden kuvaajana toimiminenkin on. Onnistuneesti kuvataan sodan molempien osapuolten toimien järjettömyyttä neutraalilla asenteella. Historianopettajille vinkkinä, että albumia voisi varmasti käyttää opetuksen apuna.
review 2: A masterwork. My comments on it would be totally irrelevant.I really appreciated the lengthy chronological history at the end. Super informative and direct. Both in the chronology and in the narrative, it was really great to have the French perspective. I feel like I've had some literary exposure to German, English, Aussie, and American expe... moreriences of the war, but this was the first I ever remember seeing from a French perspective. Made me want to read Celine. At one point he says the Americans disapprove of the young German POWs smoking cigars sent from the Kaiser. I wonder if that's a modern author imposing that, or if Americans were moralistic health freaks in the eyes of Europeans even one hundred years ago. A hundred years ago...isn't it weird to realize that what the world imagined as the advent of modern warfare -- air war, mass attrition, chemical warfare, industrialized war production, the end of cavalry, the introduction of tanks, steel helmets, etc -- is now a century old? less
