review 1: I was slightly apprehensive about starting this book after I read the reviews about it. I even considered not reading it! But I did and I'm so glad! I read this book in every little bit of spare time I had. It was so thrilling. Right from the start there is action and mystery and gets you guessing about what is going to happen. Some parts are slightly predictable but I felt that was part of the fun of reading this novel as I was saying to myself "I think he's involved but what if it's him?" And "I think I know what's gonna happen to her or will he stop it". I was slightly emotional in the middle but that was a bit of a side track to the main story. Towards the end of the book I was reading faster and faster to find out who did what? Who took who? And where everything was g... moreoing to take place. I definitely recommend this book. Even if your not usually a crime book reader this book has a twist of supernatural that fits into my favourite book category very well ignore by bad reviews on here because I love the book and I suggest you give it a read.
review 2: 4 stars. I really enjoyed this novel, the first in the Inspector McLean series by James Oswald. Set in Edinburgh, Scotland with a very likeable central character. Very fast paced, and the body count certainly mounted up very quickly. It has elements of the occult and supernatural which would normally really put me off, but it worked rather well. As is often the case with fiction, you need to suspend your disbelief a bit and just go with it. As it is a first novel in this genre, there were a few issues with it: the convoluted plot seemed to elbow out of the way some much needed descriptions of certain characters and certain things, and the dialogue was rather clunky in places. I think the author needs to drop the accents in the novel too - there was rather too much "och aye" and "doon the stairs" etc which is irritating, distracting and unnecessary for those of us readers who already know what various Scottish accents sound like. I think the series of novels will get better though and I am banking on the fact that the main characters will be fully developed over the next few novels, so I have bought the next three novels in the series. less

Ever wish Ian Rankin wrote a Rebus novel with a strange ending that involves demons? Me neither.

Really liked the supernatural twist and that it wasn't so overpowering, despite everything.

I liked it. A tad formulaic possibly, but enjoyable and engaging none the less.
