review 1: This is the third novel in the series and although the writing style, dialogue and proofreading was an improvement on the previous two novels, I felt the plot was a step backwards from the previous two novels. It just was not as exciting as the previous two novels. It had a slower paced meandering plot and was rather predictable. I was also shocked by the sheer volume of police incompetence portrayed - including my D.I. Tony McLean himself who seemed to fail to progress his various cases at all over a period of several days. I still really like the central characters though, but some of the characters like D.C. MacBride and D.S. Ritchie need to be developed a lot more.
review 2: I am so loving this series. Only 3 books in and I know I have found another se
... moreries to follow without fail! I would describe the writing as a cross between Mark Billingham and a milder Stuart MacBride. The main character, Tony McLean, is a very likeable character. His life has been fraught with sadness and in the 3rd book he is on the case of a series of suspicious hangings. Emma is still in a coma and Tony has her assault on his conscious as well. Nasty bosses, colleagues who don't believe he should still be working (he inherited quite a bit of money), weird suspects and a hint of the occult, this book has it all. less

I really like this series - a good murder mystery with a hint of a paranormal in the background.

Another gripping read in the series of Inspector McLean books. I look forward to reading more.
