Billy Boyle World War II
review 1: I am reading this series in order. Yeh Billy has been promoted, he is off to share some time with his beloved, a charming English girl, which he has neglected to inform his family about, because the family is Irish Green. He can not bring himself to tell his family he is in love with an English girl! So, off to Switzerland he goes, for a wonderful time, so he thinks, not to be, he just gets there when Uncle "Ike" sends a msg telling him to get back to London. There is murder afoot, and Billy was a prior detective in Boston before he became a Lt. in the Army. He is being utilized by his Uncle to solve murders. Off to the war zone, in Europe, he is sent again, this time the Italians are suppose to be on the allies side, however, Fascist still betray them. Billy is worri... moreed about his girlfriend who is a spy and presently in Rome, and he hopes to get to Rome to see her. It is not to be. The murders continue, using a calling card from a deck of cards. Mike is there to help Billy and so is Kaz, and a few other friends pop in and out of the story, new friends being made all the time. Things get more complicated when Billy's brother turns up on the front line, the college boys have been called to war, and not only does Billy have murders to solve, he has to keep his brother from getting killed too!Great series. Love reading them all. I am wondering if we are every going to get to North Africa with 8th Army, or the Pacific! Very good read!
review 2: This is a really excellent book. I like crime fiction but it's a struggle to find something that's intelligent and well-researched without dropping weighty hints about everything the author has read for background. I also find it hard to find something that's not too violent or gruesome, nor equally too fluffy. I have started at the wrong end of this series as this book was the only one the library had on Kindle, but I read it in a day, because it's so well written and so well plotted. The mixture of investigative discovery, character development and contextual history is in perfect balance, and Benn has done a brilliant job of weaving in the horror of war in all its aspects. There are so many books set in wartime, but this one seems to stand out to me for being so naturally written. I'm going back to the beginning of the series now to start in the right place! Highly recommended. less

I do like this series. I wasn't entirely convinced by the whodunnit here, but it worked, overall.

This series just keeps getting better and better. I anxiously await the next book in the series.
