Billy Boyle World War II
review 1: A cracking good yarn and a pretty good murder mystery, set mostly in the Vatican during the last year of WWII, as the Allies were about to start moving up the peninsula. The author apparently specializes in accurate accounts of the war, and he certainly raised matters with an air of authority that I knew nothing about. I will never again make easy criticisms of the Papacy over its cowardice and apparent miscalculations during the war. The layers of trust, loyalty, betrayal, and expectation were so complicated in the bureaucracy of that place that I don't see how anyone could have acted other than by trying to help refugees in individual cases. Meanwhile the American hero gets into tight places, manages to rescue the pretty girl, gets away relatively unscathed, and the read... moreer never gets bored.
review 2: On a more serious note, this mystery takes place in the Vatican City during WWII. Billy Boyle is sent, along with Kaz, to look into a murder of an American priest. Interesting new facts about the Pope and his treacherous balancing act to keep out of German hands, yet not alienating anybody. When the choice is to not make to many waves or be taken into German custody (for his safety) for the duration of the war, the Pope's hands are tied. Many of his bishops and monsignors are allowed to carry out aid missions behind the scenes with the silent blessing of the Pope. less

This is one of Benn's best. I enjoy the entire series, but I thought that this one was gripping.

Love this series. Historical facts that are incorporated make this so believable.
