review 1: I've been immersing myself in the dark ages yet again with this book. I picked this up on a "sale" table and it didn't disappoint. This is aimed at a male readership I think but as a female I really enjoyed the action and descriptions of the battle scenes - I almost felt I was there witnessing it all. I love history and whilst I am familiar with this time period and the invasion of William the Conqueror in 1066, I didn't know about Hereward who the author in his "Author's Note" puts in the same category as King Arthur and Robin Hood. At times I thought Hereward was written a little too "Hollywood" and almost mythic, but I enjoyed the character and I especially liked his "side-kick", Alric. The first of a trilogy, I look forward to the next novel.
review 2:
... more The first few pages got me hooked and wouldn't put it down until I was finished. This book has great action and adventure and simple romance that I love in the mix of a good book. The descriptive scenes and characters were really realistic and the emotions were powerful like I was standing right next to Hereward or Alric. The characters were unique and I can't wait for the next book to learn more about them. James Wilde is an amazing writing who brought his imagination to life in my mind as read along chapter after chapter; I will definitely read more from him. less
