review 1: This is a quiet book filled with many disquiet moments. The details, the intimacies drew me into it. I felt invited into this woman's life. I can see how the reviews are mixed and this book sent a lot of people running but I was the opposite I besotted by the I twists, turns and intricacies, set against terrific historical events. It made me greedy for more, more knowledge about the heroine, more knowledge about Jane Smiley, more knowledge about the beginnings of San Francisco, the Earthquake, unions and strikes and American involvement in WW1 and WW2. This books highlights the Person, the regular man and woman on the street. They say everyone has a story, well they do and if Jane Smiley could write all our life stories I am sure she could bring out the tragedies, the wond... moreers, the marvels that we all, even those of us who feel we live a simple life endure!
review 2: I liked the books exploration of relationships and what life may have been like during the turn of the century. The minor characters were a little difficult to keep track of, but the main ones were well developed and the author made you want to know more about them. The Einstein connection was interesting and made me want to know more about how people really felt about him and his ideas at the time. less

I found it hard to really care about the protagonist. I've liked other books by this author.

My first Jane Smiley book and maybe my only. Found it very boring, couldn't finish it.
