review 1: This book was a blast to read. Jeff Lemire hits it out of the park with a great mix of darkly humorous characters, insane opponents, and over the top gadgets and situations. It's snarky, silly, goofy, and fun. Frankenstein is for the most part the straight man, though he does mix it up a bit, and the Creature Commandos work well together, although some of the banter fell a little flat. But the story never slows down - it's like DC took BPRD and NextWave and mixed them together. Of all the New 52 titles I've read, this is the one I'm most interested in following.
review 2: In "War of the Monsters" Frankenstein (the monster, who has adopted his creator's name) teams up with a new group of Creature Commandos -- a vampire, werewolf, mummy, and amphibian/human -
... more- under the auspices of S.H.A.D.E. (the Super Human Advanced Defense Executive) to battle threats to our world and dimension from paranormal enemies all in secret from the public at large. If all this reminds you of Hellboy (and the BPRD and Abe Sapien), you're not alone. But it's all rollicking good fun. The adventure never lets up, and Frankenstein's attitude (he's continually grumpy) makes this book a joy. The artwork by Alberto Ponticelli is scratchy and rough --and a big contrast to J.G. Jones' cover images-- but when I got to the final installment of the trade, with fill-in art (sadly uncredited here) that's cleaner, I found myself missing Ponticelli's style. I was disappointed to read that the book will be cancelled after this month, as I found this one of the more enjoyable of DC's New 52 titles. less
