review 1: It's not often that a book sitting in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy shelf impresses me so deeply for its literary merits. Finch is one of those rare books--a sort of strange cocktail of Raymond Chandler, William F. Burroughs and Franz Kafka with definite nods to Lovecraft. God, the writing was beautiful. I cannot emphasize that enough. It makes me want to drown myself in VanderMeer's other books. Please, if you give genre fiction only one slot this year, pick Finch, and thank me. After the nightmares have subsided, of course.
review 2: I've really enjoyed all three Ambergris novels. Oddly enough, though this one filled in the most details about the history of Ambergris (as well as offering explanations for happenings in the earlier novels), I enjoyed it the least of them
... moreall. Perhaps it was because it was written in the most straightforward style, that of a hardboiled detective novel. That said, it's always fun to head back to the world of the gray caps, and I'm always sad when I finish one of these novels. I hope that there's more to come... less

Interesting concept, but not nearly as good as the two Area X books.

Decent story clicking over a mist of words. Exactly....
