review 1: Audiobook Review3 1/2 StarsIn this prequel to the series set in 1992 Tennessee, Dr. Bill Brockton conceives of 'The Body Farm' during a hunt for a serial killer. The story is intriguing, and it's interesting that it's only been a little over 20 years ago that modern-day forensics was born. What made this story less than sterling were two things: the narration, and the religious substance that permeates the culture and the plot. It was, however, a worthwhile read.
review 2: Excellent book. You completely get caught up in the characters. Dr. B who runs the body farm at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Brockton's assistant Tyler and our villain Satterfield. Satterfield has carried a grudge against Dr. Brockton for several years because Dr. B thought Satterfield
... more had killed a dancer in California and this lead to his dismal from the Navy SEALS and then the Navy. Satterfield was never charged with the crime because the girl had been seen with several different men the night she died. Satterfield makes a case file with all the cases that Dr. Brockton has handled for the last three years. Satterfield then picks up call girls and starts to recreate the cases that Brockton has worked. Soon Brockton puts together that it is someone who has a problem with him that is murdering these women. On his anniversary Dr. Brockton's wife Kathleen received roses and a small box, which she thought was jewelry from her husband, when she opened the box inside was a pinky. The police then put a patrol to watch Dr. Brockton, his wife and son, while they try to figure out who is committing these murders. One call girls get away from Satterfield and makes it to the highway to flag down any passing vehicle. From this escape the police get a drawing of the man who attacked her. Dr. Brockton soon remembers the case in California and the police surround Satterfield's residence. Satterfield has already figured out that the police would be coming for him so he makes his escape by killing a pizza delivery boy and taking his place, while the police are awaiting the warrant for his arrest. He planted a bomb to blow up and as the police are rushing his house the bomb goes off blowing off the pizza guys head and parts of his hands. The police feel the Dr. Brockton and his family are safe so they release the patrolmen who have been guarding the family. Satterfield soon shows up and ties everyone up, to began torturing them for the wrongs he believes Brockton committed against him. Tyler picks this time to show up at the Brockton house to tell Brockton he can no longer work for him. Tyler picks up a stone angle and throws it through the window, hitting Satterfield and pinning him to the ground. Soon their are sirens in the background and everyone is safe. Good story, rich characters, overall a great book, if you like murder, mystery. less

This was quite interesting to read, although quite strange. No Miranda. But interesting to get an idea of how the Body Farm started. It did feel a bit weird tho, the flow of the storyline. It felt like it took a long time to "set the scene", the build up, and after that it all came together very quickly.Although I didn't mind too much, I do think that might be why it took me much longer to read than the Body Farm novels usually do. It wasn't my favourite in the series.

This was just ok. WARNING: lots of graphic violence against women in this book. Also, it was set in 1992 and supposedly forensic anthropologists were just learning about dating corpses from bugs. However, the actual events that inspired this book (starting the first body farm) took place in the 1970s. This timing makes no sense to anyone who has ever read anything by Kathy Reichs or Patricia Cornwell.

Very, very gruesome. Can cause nightmares.
