review 1: 3.5 probably. In all honesty, I didn't get to finish the whole book because it was due back at the library and I skimmed the last forty or so pages, but I feel like I got the gist. I'm not going to critique it to death like usual, though, until I read the whole thing. Which I definitely plan on doing, because I genuinely enjoyed this story. The creatures got a little confusing, like what the Earthbound things exactly were and stuff. I loved Lon, despite his age. (Could've done without the annoying son and the constant reminders of the ex, if I must say so. Jupe could've been a nephew or something so that he could leave sometime, because he was so obnoxious sometimes that I wanted to push him off the cliff he lives on. But anyway, back to Lon.) Didn't imagine him with the fac... moreial hair he had though. More of a Colby Donaldson from Survivor type guy (if you don't know who that is, he's most certainly worth googling) with a clean face or rugged scruff. I also loved the way the characters talk. I like people who swear and act the way I would in a situation. Like when Cady is chasing an imp for her elderly neighbor in the beginning and she just goes "Motherfucker!" out of frustration, I could totally see myself doing that, and I was so glad she didn't say something stupid like "Oh, you!" I like the edge the characters had, and I will happily pick this up again to read it thoroughly.
review 2: This book was like the cozy mystery of urban fantasy books. The heroine had a likable voice and good rapport with her romantic interest, Lon, but the plot wasn't as earnest or action-driven as that of most other urban fantasy series. The characters were good, especially Jupe who could easily have been an obnoxious teenager but managed to come off as sweet and precocious instead of ungrateful or too cutesy. Bennett put her own spin on magic and demons with her use of Heka and created a world that I would gladly explore more. The somewhat slow-moving plot was the only thing that kept me from giving this book 5 stars. less

Did not like Arcadia, very inconsistent (behaviour vs. goals).
