review 1: 3.5 stars. This was a 3 until the last fifty pages. And the only reason is because I couldnt connect with the characters. I felt like I was looking at them through a telescope; they felt distant, although I liked Kate and was very intrigued by Silas. Love the last couple pages. The main strength of Shadowcry is the story and world building. It's so different, eerie, and unique. I loved the descriptions and the creepy gothic feel, how dark it is, and I loved the idea of the veil and Kate's connection to it. It reminded me of what I imagined the veil in Order of the Phoenix was like once you stepped through. The prologue is one of my favorite book openings that I've read in awhile! It set the tone for the whole book. I just wish I could have felt more emotionally invested. T... morehe story is strong enough that I'm curious to read to sequel though.
review 2: Like Eragon with a girl and no dragons, "Shadowcry" is a new, fantasy story of an adolescent who discovers her inherent magic is the key to saving the world.Kate has always worked in her uncle Artemis' bookstore, surviving in the corrupt world of Albion where no one is safe from the Wardens and the all-powerful council in the capital city of Fume. Albion is at war with every neighboring country because it possesses a singular resource: the Skilled. The Skilled are a group of necromancers who can cross the "Veil" between life and death, a power that could cause destruction to every enemy. During one of the culls to gather innocent citizens for the front lines, Kate and her friend Edgar must escape the heinous Silas, a half-alive monster who serves the power-hungry Da'ru, leader of Albion's high council and one of the Skilled. Kate discovers that she is the sole heir to the magical "Wintercraft," the book with the secrets of the Skilled that Da'ru will stop at nothing to possess and use for her own selfish ends. This story had a lot of potential, but it truly fell short of my expectations. Kate discovers her magic and almost immediately has complete control over her powers. None of the characters become particularly developed during this book, and while I understand the desire to keep some information back for the later books, it made the characters flat and difficult with whom to sympathize. Da'ru's motivations are shallow at best for as evil as she's made out to be, and Burtenshaw's style makes Silas seem completely evil and cruel one second, then helpful and rational the next. The city of Fume and Albion in general drew my attention, but the execution of the book was so careless that I lost interest halfway through and finished just to see if it got better.A little too predictable for my tastes, "Shadowcry" lacks the plot movement, strong character development, and understandable motivations that I prefer to see in good fiction. less
