review 1: I am continuing to very much enjoy this series. It's been a long time since I read the first book, but I found that after a couple pages of confusion it was easy enough to settle back into the storyline. My favorite part about this series is its dark, creepy, gothic alternate-historical setting. Rarely do you come across such dark books for this age group. I also enjoy the frenetic, National-Treasure-like pace of the story. The characterization in this story wasn't amazing - I guess it's assumed you are familiar with the characters after the first book. Silas's character is explored a little more but Kate and Edgar are too busy running for their lives to develop much, and of course, Dalliah is left an enigma. My favorite character continues to be the crow (he kinda go... moret a raw deal, in this book!). The world building is great, though; I appreciate an alternative history setting and the underground world below Fume was fascinating. One quibble I had in particular was that the "good guys" - Kate and Silas - weren't all that great at evading the "bad guys" [read: TERRIBLE], and seemed to continue to trust far too easily when it was obvious to the reader that neither the Skilled, nor the Blackwatch, nor Dalliah, were trustworthy in the least. The book ends on a good cliffhanger, so I will be checking out the third book in the trilogy asap.
review 2: Like the book says, you have to see the veil to believe in it, and as a reader, i just couldnt grasp it in my mind. i couldnt understand how the veil was being torn, how that was different than Albion, and how Kate was controlling yet not controlling it. I understood it enough, though, to get through the book.Silas Dane aka my favorite character is awesome, he cant die, and he saved Edgar. When she 'killed' Edgar i practically exploded into tears, because i love him! if i had been him, i wouldve totally ditched her from the start. less
