review 1: My favorite of the series so far :DLord Cameron Mackenzie and his brothers were taught by their father that women were to be treated in a specific manner: to be used to produce male heirs. Courtesans (great word to be used, btw) were the only ones used for any other pleasure. Emotions were to be left out of the equation. So, in the time of this great romance novel, we meet Ainsley Douglass, Isabella's friend and also someone Lord Cameron had caught in the same place six years ago: hiding at his window ledge (spying and doing spy stuff xD well, more like retrieving artifacts/items for her friends. The first a fellow lady who Cameron hadn't let back into his room for a necklace, and the second... well, the Queen of England in the 1800's. Dear Queen Victoria, damn). We learn mo... morere about Cameron. He's not only part of the infamous Mad Mackenzies (haha, yeah, right; they seem normal to me), but he has the background of being a widower and great gigolo (pardon, he's a great bachelor with no intentions to marry... well, anyone). Never mind that he's one of the best horse trainers in the land, but word. Talk about a man with passions, with a gentleness reserved for those he cares about :)We learn more about him along the way, and through the fantastic character of Ainsley and himself, we get to see more into the life of the family. Hart Mackenzie, the eldest of the Mackenzies and the head of the family, is out and about doing what Dukes ('cause he's a Scottish Duke trying to win over England so he can give Scotland freedom/independence from the kingdom) and other Lord of the time did best: he's throwing a soiree... or whatever. And we get to see other stuff, but I'm getting way offline here.We get to see how plain and practical Ainsley is considering her low birth (and lack of funds), but Cameron sees her as something more than that. She's steadfast, sneaky, and awesome. He sees her as someone who should be taken care of rather than taking care of others (she was once married, and has been a widow for the last 4-ish years? But yeah, she's basically everyone's go-and-getter/messenger/helper/...or whatever else Isabella, the Queen, and others/friendsAndStrangers ask her to do).And they tease themselves about buttons xDAnyway, the characterization here is great. Lord Cameron's sins aren't many, but he makes do with his demons (his first and only wife had been someone he'd fallen in love with back in his early 20's. Everyone knows it as being a bad marriage... because it ended with her suicide, though no one believes that, but she'd been a crazy lady who physically abused him :( and she's the one who messed him up. I mean, apart from his abusive father, but yeah). And Ainsley helps him on the way with her spunky awesomeness and big heart (she's my favorite of all the Mackenzie wives, btw).Yes, she accepts him for his past and helps him overcome it all. Plus, she buys him the horse he wanted.I totally recommend this to anyone who wants a quick read for a lovely flowing romance. It was great, and I keep coming back to read about them xD Because they're my second favorite couple apart from Mac and Isabella. :B Plus, everyone's having babies. Jeez, you'd think that love and prosperity wasn't so lovely and adorable.
review 2: What a fabulous, sexy, gorgeous, family of men. Who wouldn't want to look after and love these, big, handsome, mentally....and in Cameron's case....unspeakably physically, abused, Scottish hunks?Cameron is married at a very young age, to an older, beautiful, mentally unstable, and cruelly vindictive woman. Elizabeth a couple of years older, but decades in experience, puts this beautiful young man, already abused (by his bully of a Father) through a short but horrendous, sadistic, mental and physical nightmare. They have a child very early on in their marriage and Cameron finds he has to protect his tiny infant son as well as himself, from Elizabeth's evil torture and increasing unstableness.Elizabeth dies under tragic circumstances after one of her increasingly violent outbursts. Cameron is left with a tiny son to care for and a deep resentment of women, vowing never to remarry, he takes his pleasure physically but does not allow himself to trust or to become close to a woman. He ignores the whispers of society, although the verdict on Elizabeth is suicide, he is secretly known as one of the 'mad Mackenzies' and is widely believed to have killed her.All of the brothers have a particular talent, Cam's is horses, his salvation, he pours his love and restless energy into his gift and becomes one of the foremost trainers in the Country. Lonely, ill equipped to bring up a child, he nevertheless muddles along with the help of his volatile but loving brothers and Daniel grows into his teens as a loveable, likeable young man, showing every expectation of becoming another 'mad Mackenzie'.Cam briefly comes into contact with Ainsley Douglas while she is married to her much older husband. Ainsley is a 'manager', sometimes misguided, but a lovely, loyal, young woman, she attempts to help a friend, albeit in rather dubious circumstances. Caught hiding in Cam's bedchamber she is very nearly ravished by him, the physical attraction between them is immediate. Ainsley nearly succumbs but her loyalty to her ageing, loving husband, prevents her from indulging. Cam is struck by her integrity, something he believes does not exist, and allows her to escape with her virtue intact.Six years later, Ainsley, now widowed, encounters Cameron again. Hart Mackenzie is hosting a house party and Ainsley has been invited as a friend of Isabella, his sister in law. Ainsley is a lady in waiting to Queen Victoria, some rather sensitive letters, written by that lady to a friend have been stolen and are in danger of being made public. Ainsley again to the rescue! This time Cam discovers her quest and deeply attracted to this lady, whom he nicknames 'Mouse', decides to help in the hope of persuading her to an affair. Her dull clothing hides the blonde, grey eyed beauty, that few people, other than himself can see. He discovers she is funny, loyal, loving, clever, decidedly sneaky (after discovering her picking a lock with a hairpin) and he wants this beautiful tomboy for his own. Ainsley is more than willing and slowly starts to unravel the complex, scarred man that is Lord Cameron Mackenzie.Jennifer Ashley tells a beautiful story of a perceptive, loving young woman, slowly healing the needy, damaged, restless Cam Mackenzie. Ms.Ashley has a talent for drawing the reader in and allows us, in her clever way, to feel Cam's agony and vulnerability. The slow breaking down of his defences and the winning of his trust by the indomitable Ainsley, who simply loves Cam, and in her normal forthright way determines to heal him,is beautiful. Is there ever any doubt she will achieve this? A beautiful tale of love and hard won trust. 5 stars, Jennifer Ashley, this series is lovely and I'm very glad I discovered it a long way down the line, so do not have to wait for the next one! less

Great story spoiled by a mediocre narrator.I have read all of the Highland Pleasures series, and Lord Cameron's story is my favorite. I was awfully disappointed by the audiobook, though. Angela Dawe has a lovely voice, but her narration style is sing-songy. She's very weak on male voices, and Lord Cameron just sounded like someone with laryngitis. She used much more of a Scottish accent that the author wrote in the book, and it was hit and miss. And Ainsley, who is supposed to be young and fresh and joyful, mostly just sounded sultry and bored.Five stars for the story, not the narrator.

This is a love story 6 years in the making. It's a wonder how the most unexpected person is the one you end up with. Both Cameron and Ainsley had tragic pasts. Their steamy encounter in Cam's room 6 years ago left them both with an unforgettable attraction. I liked how the mysteries were unraveled and I hated Cam's ex-wife. Ms Ashley definitely knew how to weave a story with drama, family values, love, and a lot of erotic couplings. I'm looking forward to the next.
