review 1: Not the best in the series, but definitely better than Charlie Bone and the Castle of Mirrors. I was disheartened about the several chapters where Charlie has to fill in other characters about what has been happening since they weren't with him when it happened. It almost felt like review since you rarely learned something you hadn't already known. Aside from that though, not a bad book. I really liked it. I almost gave this book a 3 star rating because of said tedious thing above.Charlie and the other charactors aare finally getting closer to the Shadow. The Shadow actually first appeared in book 5 but doesn't really have a big role in either this book or the 5th one. So a better title for this book would have been Charlie Bone and something regarding Badlock. Which i'll ... moreexplain what it is.The shadow is back causing trouble when Charlie notices that his great aunts and his grandmother (th emean one, not the nice one) are talking about some huge picture. Suddenly, Charlie is swept up in the picture and goes thru the picture to Badlock. A place and somewhat town where the shadow is from. Things become worse when one of the other endowed are kidnapped into Badlock. So yeah, I think this book shouldn't have been called "And the shadow," as I think on it now, i'd say a better title would have been "And the town of Badlock," or "and the painting of badlock." or "and Badlock," or "and Badlock town." or something of the like. You get the gist.
review 2: The funny thing about Jenny Nimmo is thats she loves to write in insects that communicate with the main hero, in Snow Spider trilogy it was the spider, and in Charlie Bone, now its a moth. And the thing is that you can make a dialog between a moth who cant speak and a boy only so interesting before it plays itself out, and becomes tiresome. I get that welsh background plays a big part in her writing style, and the names, places and mythology give her ideas for her books, but it just does not connect with me always. It keeps me muddled and i lose my focus now and then, and there isn't any urgent feeling to reading it. You just don't really care about anything. It is kind of the diluted version of Harry Potter less
