review 1: This book tells the origin story of the Red King from the Charlie Bone series. We never learned much about his origins during the Charlie Bone books so this book caught my interest when I first saw it. Unfortunately it didn't hold my interest while I was reading it. I had a very easy time putting it down, although I always intended to finish it at some point. There were parts throughout the story that caught my interest, but not enough to carry me through the entire book - even though it is quite short. Although for big Charlie Bone fans there are quite a few references that are fun. I particularly enjoyed learning the origins of the Flames, the three cats in Charlie Bone. I recommend this for those who are huge Charlie Bone fans or huge Jenny Nimmo fans. Don't start ... morewith this one, though. Read other Jenny Nimmo books first. 2.5 stars.
review 2: this is the first book in the new series by jenny nimmo chronicling the life of the red king as he grows up as a young boy (and a not so young boy) finding his way away from the danger in his homeland of africa. it is interesting to read about the character that we have learned only a little about in the charlie bone books. i would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the charlie bone series...but you may want to read that series first as it will make a little more sense. less
