review 1: I loved the pictures in this book. They were beautifully well drawn, and used well to tell the story of the tortoise and the hare. I liked how it showed and emphasized how slow but determined the tortoise was, and how he did not let anything stop him. The author painted a favorable light on the tortoise, and the opposite for the hare. I also think that the clothing that the tortoise and the hare spoke to their character as well. The Tortoise was dressed humbly and simply, while the Hare dressed in a nice 'shirt.' I also liked how the author taught the moral of the story through pictures.
review 2: A stunningly beautiful book. I can appreciate the art, but I do lament that there weren't more words to accompany the visuals. I found that Pinkney's afterword provid... moreed insights into why he told the story as he did. His discussion of his fresh new take on the Hare was particularly interesting. The intricate detail of the illustrations makes this a book that is better read with one child at a time than with an entire class--unless you have access to a document projector. less
