review 1: Pinkney, J. (2009). The lion and the mouse. New York, NY: Hatchette Book Group. Award/review source: Caldecott AwardPlace found: Virginia Beach Central Library (and Blackboard Caldecott listing)This wonderful picture book is a re-make of Aesop's fable with the same title, however, what makes this book stand out is the fantastic use of illustration and setting. At a point in the book, a small mouse is at the disposal of a large lion, but the lion lets the mouse go back to her family. The mouse is able to repay the lion later by saving its' life. The illustrative use of colored pencil and watercolor help bring out the expression in the faces of the lion and mouse in this amazing wordless picture book. I would definitely use this story during an Aesop fable unit in my classro... moreom, and also maybe have a lesson on how illustration can tell a story by itself. I personally would recommend this book to anyone and any of my peers going into elementary education just because of it's versatility for use in the classroom.
review 2: The book “The Lion and the Mouse” won the 2011 Caldecott Medal. It is a very well-known story of where a lion attempts to eat a mouse until he is captured in a hunters net. The mouse frees the lion and they become friends at the end of the story. This a great book about trust and friendship and the illustrations did a great job of being able to tell the story just through the pictures. Even though many older story book images don’t seem to fit the text this particular story did the opposite. It shows that anyone can become friends despite their differences and that no act of kindness goes unnoticed. Every beginning reader will be able to learn what body language looks like. A interesting lesson that someone could use in the classroom from this book is asking students what other animals out there could have this similar type of relationship. less
