review 1: In the summer of 1976, Jamie really finds herself, loses herself, and then finds herself again. Her best friend's Tammy and Debbie are the closest thing to sister she has (besides, of course, her older sister Renee who despises her due to the fact that Jamie is much more developed than she is.) Jamie's parents, Betty and Allen, never fail to mortify her with the never-ending swim parties that consist of naked adults and smoking pot. She forms a relationship with the most Popular guy around, Flip Jenkins, and they are basically inseparable. she discovers the wonders of love, sex, and life. When everything comes crashing down after Flip leaves her, she gains weight and goes a little crazy trying to find the affection that Flip had given her from someone else. Unfortunately, ... moreshe confuses love with lust, and she loses everything close to her, including Debbie and Tammy. This book was completely unrealistic in so many way, but was very fun and amusing to get through. Jessica Anya Blau's writing style is easy to read, and the story all together was cute and imaginative. For instance, think of every good or bad thing that could happen in a summer....it happened to Jamie. From her mother bringing a fake Native American into their home for 9 days, to a baby drowning in the pool out back. Overall, The Summer of Naked Swim Parties was interesting and unique, but had a dry sense of humor and didn't make a lot of sense sometimes.
review 2: For a book trying to capture the 70s, it needed just a bit of fact checking. Also, it wasn't nearly as funny as the hype.I liked the mother, and the second-hand embarrassment I got from the daughter's reaction to the mother. But it was predictable (I guessed the central person in the big 'plot point' instantly upon introduction), and I thought the ending left too much unresolved.I picked this up because Judy Blume mentioned it on Twitter. I like Blume's work better. Still. less
