review 1: I'm not really sure what kept me reading this novel. (Even though it's relatively short, it took me two and a half months, which is unusual, particularly since I wasn't reading anything else at the time.) I didn't feel a real connection to the characters, a British spy captured by cruel jihadists (is there any other kind?) and an emotionally detached scientist/mathematician obsessed with the deepest reaches of the ocean who met and... fell in love?--and the nonlinear plot, riddled with flashbacks and philosophical musings and obscure scientific/mathematical background, was not especially compelling. (The horrendous scenes of captivity in Somalia and the descriptions of the jihadists were probably the most interesting part, but even that was told in a sort of sterile way th... moreat didn't grab me emotionally.) I did enjoy the author's way with words; some of the language is frankly beautiful, but it feels isolated, much like the characters were from each other (and most other human beings) except during the brief reminiscences of their torrid (in their minds) affair. I don't know why I continued reading well beyond the point when I stopped hoping that something would happen to make it better.
review 2: It’s a fascinating novel, and also a philosophical contemplation of the place of humanity (human life) on this planet. James More is a British agent who has been captured by Somali jihad fanatics. Danielle (Danny) Flinders is a mathematician who specializes in life a the bottom of the deepest parts of the ocean. The novel follows their activities over some months. In the end there are hints about what might happen next, but the book simply ends without any assurances. A very good book. less
