review 1: A fairly quick read. This book goes over the concepts such as the industry structure, value chain, and strategy, and the common misconceptions and mistakes companies make. One recurrent theme is importance of defining a unique strategy, discovering and increasing advantages it confers, and doubling down on their value proposition.Companies such as IKEA, Southwest and Zara are overviewed. An interesting claim is that behind any high sustained ROIC is usually a unique, interdependent set of choices related to how the value is generated and delivered.Another simple, but intriguing thought in the book is that selecting how much (and which) value you can deliver, and at what costs, is subject to optimization. The strongest companies harness synergies between multiple factors. F... moreor instance, self-assembly of furniture actually makes owners feel more pride of ownership, increasing the perceived value of the furniture.Reading this book alongside with Christensen and Drucker has been very helpful, as these thinkers provide related, but distinct views on same issues.I enjoyed this book as a prelude to reading the original, full Porter's works.
review 2: I found two copies of this on a conference table at work. I have no idea who left them there, but I took one home and read it. Maybe I thought that it contained SECRET MANAGEMENT POWERS.Maybe it does? For being solidly in the light business book genre (only about two hundred pages, big print, goofy formatting, diagrams), this book was surprisingly good. It has given me a few more concrete ways of answering questions like, "How is my company competing with others? On what basis are our competitors competing with us? What is our industry like? Blah blah blah blah blah etc etc?" Nobody is going to ask me these questions anytime soon, but who cares? You can't act like a know-it-all very well if you limit yourself to knowing useful things. Please shoot me if I start using the phrases "value chain analysis", "competitive advantage", or "the five forces" in conversation, though. less

A solid recap of Porter's work as I guess I hadn't soaking it up fully in business school.
