review 1: Audio book. Maggie's family is struggling financially, so they have moved from the big city to the remote town of Gill Creek. She leaves behind good friends and a city she loves, but fortunately she finds a great friend nearby in the beautiful Pauline. Through Pauline, she meets Liam whom she is very drawn to, but who adores Pauline. The reader can see where things are heading from the very start. Maggie's arrival coincides with the arrival of the Door County Killer, who targets young girls--girls like herself and Pauline. When the killer strikes a little too close to home, Pauline is sent away, and Maggie and Liam get involved romantically. But then the killer is captured, and Pauline comes home. And the reader knows the other shoe is about to drop. The book is narrated b... morey this otherworldly presence who is not identified for quite a while, and it had the effect of making me feel disconnected from the story. All these young girls were being killed, and this otherworldly presence was waxing lyrical. I just really wanted a hard-boiled detective to show up and DO something. Frankly I was sick of the two girls and the weedy boy. Furthermore, I was pretty uncomfortable with the ending; I just don't think feeding teen readers the idea of the "noble sacrifice" is a good one.
review 2: I read this and "The Word Ghost" one straight after the other. Both of them are lovely and quirky. The Vanishing Season - was a captivating read with the odd twist and turn to keep you guessing. I loved how the book resolved even though there was heartbreak aplenty in different guises. Had a "Lovely Bones" feel to it including a view of the afterlife. Another book I can't wait to share with my book club - so many points of discussion. less
