review 1: This story gets better and stranger with each book. Lots of character development in this volume, with a healthy does of strange-scary. The writing is excellent and the art is great. I do have one beef with the art, though. All the characters look too similar to me. It's just a stylistic thing, but sometimes it gets on my nerves. It's better in this book than in earlier books where I hadn't learned the characters. In any case, this is a great chapter in the story and I only see it intensifying from here.
review 2: Art: Gabriel Rodriguez once again does a fabulous job of setting the tone for such an amazing story. There isn't much more I can say about his work that I didn't already say in my review for Locke & Key volume 1 Welcome to Lovecraft. Art gets 5.Story:
... more Whereas, with volume 2 Head Games, I said that I felt like the story was a bit slower due to the fact of so much back story crammed into the volume. That is not the case in volume 3. From the onset of chapter 1, I was hooked. The story just keeps building to this crescendo that keeps you flipping page after page wanting more until you get to the final page and are like "Dammit, man. Now I have to wait to get my hands on volume 4." I also love the little pop culture references that are thrown in the volumes. In volume 2 Head Games, Dodge was singing Foreigner's "Head Games" and in this volume Kinsey is reading Bode "Peter Pan" which definitely fits. You'll have to read for yourself to see what I mean. No spoilers given here. Joe Hill has once again delivered a finely crafted, intense story. The writing gets a 5 as well.Five's across the board for this one. I'm a big fan of books without pictures and Joe Hill's story could stand on its own as a novel, but I can guarantee you that nothing your mind's eye can come up with would fit this story as well as Gabriel Rodriguez's art does. On the other hand, Rodriguez's art could tell this story on its own (you might need to add a few more panels to convey certain things), but without Hill's writing style and voice, it would not be the same. When you put these 2 guys together and they both put their chosen profession to the same page, you end up with something magical. No 2 comics artist and writer have ever been so well matched together. less
