review 1: This was a really neat short story and "Testing Guide" for those who have either read the first two books, or haven't. I love that it was from Zeen's point of view, and I love that we got to see te relationship between Cia (at age 10 here ) and Zeen. It was SO Cute, and really hit home the emotion that I felt reading Independent Study! Great prequel or companion story, depending the order you read it!
review 2: Cia Vale studies hard so she can finish at the top of her class and hopefully move onto "The Testing" and attend university. It was what her father did and she hopes to follow in his footsteps and try to help their post-war civilization recover. However, her brother before her, Zeen, did the same and he wasn't selected for The Testing. Cia hopes and is
... moresurprised that she is one of the chosen few that will undertake The Testing. Will it be what she hopes for, or will it be as dangerous as her father says. Before starting the audiobook, The Testing, I decided to dig into the novella, The Testing Guide, which is a prequel to this new series by Joelle Charbonneau. I've read several dystopia series and quite enjoy them, so I was hoping I'd like this one too. If The Testing Guide is anything to go by I'm pretty sure I'm going to love The Testing. The series is set in a post-war civilization that is trying to repair itself and it sends certain students to university to study and develop new skills to make their country better. I like this concept as it is fairly new-to-me, and different from the other series.I like Zeen, who we see early on and from his point of view. He's disappointed that he didn't get selected. We then move to Cia's point of view and she has the same high hopes. The Testing Guide gave me just enough preview of this series that I'm really eager to start The Testing and then pick up the latest release, Independent Study. less
