Nature of Desire
review 1: This one was a slow starter for me. Even at about 40% in, I was struggling to keep on with it. Thankfully, it picked up and I ended up enjoying it. We have Marcus and Thomas as the two MC's. 27 year old Thomas is an extremely talented artist who hides his true self from his religious mother, sister and wheelchair bound brother. After the death of his father, Thomas leaves his life in New York to return home to help run the family hardware store. In doing this, he turns his back on 40 year old Marcus who is not only the man who discovered Thomas and promoted his work in his gallery, but is also his Dom. The story starts when Marcus comes back into Thomas' life, giving him a cheque for the paintings he has sold and asking him to produce more, knowing that the business... more is struggling and they need the money. Thomas has had the artists equivalent of writers block so Marcus offers him the opportunity to spend a week with him in the Berkshires to encourage his talents. Thomas is reluctant, knowing that this will also mean a week spent in his Masters bed. Thomas clearly has strong feelings for Marcus but it's difficult to like the Dom as he is very closed off, we know virtually nothing about him and it is obvious he doesn't let Thomas in. It is only when we start to see Marcus' walls comes down and that he keeps himself guarded for a reason, that you begin to like him. There is a fair amount of hot sex and kinkiness between the two men which initially felt more like a possessive act on Marcus' part and therefore didn't feel like the two men had any kind of deeper connection. That aside, Marcus does redeem himself and Thomas eventually grows a proverbial pair. Happy ever afters all round.
review 2: Absolutely wonderful. A very sexy, marvelously written, character driven mm romance. There were so many good lines, so many terrific scenes that it took me a week to read it because I savored each line and re-read multiple passages. I loved both Thomas and Marcus equally. The secondary characters were well drawn. There were parts of the book where I sobbed, laughed and squirmed. Joey Hill is an author I seek when I want multi-layered magical writing. Can't say enough good things about her work. I just get lost in her words. So great! less
